What is TextStrangers?
TextStrangers is a free website for talking to strangers online through text. Press one button and you're matched with a random person for a live, one-on-one conversation — no sign-up, no download, no camera and no microphone.
It's made for people who want a real conversation without the pressure of video: meeting someone from another country, practising a language, passing the time late at night, or simply talking to someone who doesn't know you. When you're done, press Next and meet someone else.
Everyone on TextStrangers is 18 or older, and every chat is anonymous by default. You decide what to share.

Anonymous chat with strangers
You don't need an email, phone number or real name to use TextStrangers. When you start chatting you're simply “Stranger”, and so is the person you meet. Accounts are optional — if you create one, you choose your display name, and you can hide your profile from strangers whenever you like.

Safe, private and moderated
Random chats aren't saved. Messages pass through our servers so they can be checked and delivered, and are only held briefly in case someone reports the conversation.
Every message goes through an automatic filter for hate speech, links, spam and content that puts minors at risk. You can block or report anyone with one tap, people you block are never matched with you again, and reports are reviewed by moderators.

TextStrangers keeps the best part — instant, random, anonymous conversations — and leaves out the webcam. Is TextStrangers free?
Yes. There's no subscription and nothing to install. Accounts are optional.
Is there video or voice?
No, and there never will be. TextStrangers is text only: no camera, no microphone, no calls.
Are my conversations saved?
Private chats aren't saved. The last few messages are held in temporary memory for up to 15 minutes after a chat ends, only so they can be attached if someone reports the conversation. You can optionally keep a history on your own device, and delete it any time. Messages with friends you add are different: they're saved for 90 days so you can read them on any device.
How does matching work?
You're paired with one random person who's also looking. If you've added interests, we try to find someone who shares one first; if that takes more than a few seconds, we widen the search. You can also choose the language you want to chat in.
What happens when I report someone?
The chat ends, the person is blocked from being matched with you again, and the report — with the recent messages — goes to our moderation queue for review.
Who can use TextStrangers?
Adults only. You must be 18 or older, and you'll be asked to confirm your age before your first chat.
Is TextStrangers an Omegle alternative?
Yes. It works like Omegle did — random, anonymous and one-on-one — but it's text only, with interest matching, games, friends and moderation built in.
Do I need to sign up or download anything?
No. TextStrangers runs in your browser and you can start chatting straight away. You only need an account if you want a profile picture, themes or friends.
Can I make friends and keep chatting?
Yes. If you both have an account, you can both tap “Add friend” during a chat, or share your invite link. Friends can message each other any time and create private groups.
Can I choose who I'm matched with?
You can add interests and choose a chat language. We look for someone who shares them first, and you can choose to only match people who speak your language.
Can I text strangers without giving a phone number?
Yes. TextStrangers never asks for a phone number, and you don't need an email address to chat.
Are the public chat rooms moderated?
Yes. Room messages go through the same automatic filter as private chats, anyone can report a message, and moderators can remove messages and ban people.
